Chapter 19

Sage was bursting with happiness when she was back in the kitchen, mixing up batter. The rest of dinner had been a very awkward affair, with the clanking of silverware and slurping of spaghetti the only sounds. Paige had been so emotional after Reagan’s outburst that as soon as they finished eating, Wynn had left to take her back to the inn. Zane and Tempest were soon to follow, and Carl, so tired after running and the large amounts of meatballs and baked goods he had scarfed down, said he had to turn in early.

“Hey.”

Sage looked up from her chocolate batter and smiled at Ramona, who was standing in the doorway. She and Lenore had stayed behind to wash the dishes.

“Mom’s finishing up the big pots,” Ramona said.

“How are you feeling?” Sage asked. “That was quite the dinner.”

“Pretty good,” Ramona said noncommittally.

“It seems like Reagan has quite a few issues to work through,” Sage said.

“Maybe if you gave her a fortune, she could focus on the future instead of the past,” Ramona said.

Sage froze as Reagan mumbling “I’m going to kill you dead” popped back into her mind, and she wondered if the dinner-party explosion was only a step before she snapped completely. Or had she already and killed Quinn in a rage?

“But she wasn’t wrong,” Ramona said.

“Wrong about what?” Sage asked.

“The group, everyone, me…”

“If you want to talk, you better hurry before Mom comes down to take you back to prison,” Sage said.

“I dropped out of college,” Ramona said, staring at her sister in hopes that she wouldn’t freak out. “Well, I didn’t drop out. I’m just taking a gap year.”

“Why?” Sage asked, extending the word since she knew there was more to the story.

“I don’t want to go into elementary education,” Ramona said.

“And you didn’t want to tell Mom because she was so excited you had decided to follow in her career footsteps,” Sage said.

“You know me so well.” Ramona rounded the counter and gave her sister a sideways hug so she didn’t get flour all over herself. “I haven’t been able to figure out what I want to do, so I decided I shouldn’t just sink money into random classes while I decide.”

“I know this isn’t what you want to hear, but you should tell Mom and Dad,” Sage said. “They’ve always been supportive of our dreams. Look at me. They were one hundred percent behind me going to culinary school.”

“Sage, did you see how many pastries Dad ate tonight?” Ramona asked.

Sage chuckled. “That doesn’t mean they won’t support you. It will come as a shock to them, but they will help you however you need.”

“You’re right as usual,” Ramona said. “I just wanted to at least have some idea of what I wanted to do with my life first.”

“Bouncing ideas off someone can be helpful,” Sage said.

“I know, and I’ll have to tell them now anyway,” Ramona said.

Woof!

“Was that a dog?” Ramona asked.

Sage shrugged and hurried to turn around so her sister couldn’t read her expression.
